The Mindful Unplug has never been an ordinary mindfulness retreat. It is a full sensory experience that acknowledges the Ranch environs as a profound source of lasting teachings. The week offers extraordinary opportunities to reconnect both with one’s inner landscape and a joy of community. We direct our individual and collective awareness in the embrace of the Ranch through mindful movement, contemplative practices, sensory awareness, and shared inquiry.

Mindful Unplug: The Spirit of PresenceThose who have experienced the serenity of the Feathered Pipe Ranch know of its power to teach, heal, and revive our capacity to experience joy. Mother Nature is omnipresent at the Ranch—mountains one can touch, woods and forests barely minutes away, our own spring-fed lake, and ample open spaces for solitude. We will nourish ourselves, find grounding, and replenish our individual and collective resilience. The week will include accessible yoga and mindful movement, sensory practices, forest immersion, music and sound, meditation, and free time for solitude or community. Throughout, there will be camaraderie, fun, and unexpected moments of joy and inspiration.

The Mindful Unplug is a rare chance to renew. Our guides’ intention is to nourish a supportive environment for people to come together and facilitate healing during these challenging times. Our guide team is privileged to accompany all of you in this experience.

— Longtime Ranch friend Matthew Marsolek of Drum Brothers is returning to The Unplug in 2021 to share sessions built around participatory sound, rhythm practices, and voice awareness.  Simple, guided exercises to open and free the voice as a prelude to a song circle, utilizing chants and songs gathered from Matthew’s travels abroad and studies in World Music.

Mindful Unplug - Mindfulness Retreat— Mindful Unplug emcee Anne Jablonski of Yoga Set Free will serve as your guide for daily yoga, mindful movement, and meditation practices.  Anne’s mission is to have you return home with tools to reset mindfully and shore up your resilience reserves.

— Our sensory awareness guide, renowned photographer Zane Williams, returns to the Unplug to encourage reconnection to our Original Teacher.  He will assist all in experiencing the vast sensory gifts that the Ranch environs offer.  There will be exploration into “forest bathing” (also known as shinrin-yoku) and night sky meditation. Over the course of our week, we’ll move toward feeling and experiencing nature less as a separate entity “out there” and more as the native fabric of our everyday lives.

We’ve seen how tending to qualities of mindfulness and inner ease at the Ranch helps people become beacons of compassion and goodness for their families, workplaces, and communities. Our attendees describe the Mindful Unplug week as a potent catalyst for recovering equanimity and embracing the bounty of the present moment. If the experience of past participants is any guide, you’re likely to discover that your contentment and peace can exist free of the external chaos around us.

Mindful Unplug - Digital Detox“You allowed me to discover your graces at my own pace. You have restored in me a newfound peace. I will be forever grateful for this week and I pray that I will be able to carry the lessons I have learned with this week with me for all my days on this earth.”

“It was a rich and varied experience — beautiful and meaningful activities, interactions with people, and physically and emotionally healing. The food, lodging, natural beauty, staff — it was all so nurturing and stimulating.”

“My heart here was filled with love, laughter, challenges, and joy. All part of a good recipe for growth.”

“I can’t adequately explain the experience when people ask, but it seems to me perhaps like a work of art? First, you are alone with your thoughts or ideas; then, perhaps noticing something more – such as colorful spools of thread or seeing unique patterns and shades in the light. And soon there are also individual squares of lovely textured fabrics that have formed to include palpable elements of depth and soul. And then, before you know it, this all blossoms into one magnificent living quilt! Bound together by spirit. By love. By each other. By Feathered Pipe.”

Mindful Unplug - Anne JablonskiPausing, Breathing, Moving, Meditating – Anne Jablonski

A Yoga-Alliance registered teacher (E-RYT 500) in Virginia, Anne teaches at Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, serves as President of the Feathered Pipe Foundation (she is the den mother and emcee of the Mindful Unplug!) and juggles work for busy startup companies. She knows what it’s like to yearn for practical ways to insert mindful pauses into a rat-race-y life. Anne’s teaching draws on inspiration from her most influential teachers: Erich Schiffmann, every fine poet, Hanuman, her cheeky teacher within, and the teacher that’s inspired her most—the Feathered Pipe Ranch itself.

Mindful Unplug - Zane WilliamsSensing the Present Moment – Zane Williams

Zane picks up his camera less frequently these days, preferring to appreciate the world unmediated through devices. A more deeply-felt sense of participation with Nature and embracing the present moment is what’s needed now more than ever, he feels.  Zane’s long tenure photographing landscapes, photographing people, and contributing his photography to volunteer humanitarian projects informs inquiries and themes during the Mindful Unplug week: greater immersion in Nature, cultivating an appreciation for solitude and silence; and making relationship and connection with all in front of us.  All connections weave together, as David Abram says, to renew “our acquaintance with the sensual world.”
