स तु दीर्घकालनैरंतर्यसत्कारासेतवितो दृढभूमिः। (sa tu dīrgha-kāla nairantarya-satkārāsevito dṛḍha-bhūmiḥ)

~ Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra 1.14

.

This sutra from Patanjali’s aphorisms describes Abhyasa or Practice. It is commonly translated as, “long uninterrupted alert practice is the foundation for restraining the fluctuations of the mind”.

Surpassing Limitation: The Relief of Letting Go - Lynne MintonI never quite felt like I was living up to the ‘long, uninterrupted alert’ part and therefore would never realize the ‘restraining the fluctuations’ part. But the Sanskrit translation of the individual words can give a deeper, richer, and often more accessible meaning to Patanjali’s thread. Dirghakāla, often given the meaning, ‘a long time’ can also mean, surpassing or beyond time. Nairantarya can mean without interruption, but it can also mean without end, or beyond limits. Satkāra is observing the truth with reverence and āsevitaḥ according to one Sanskrit scholar, means noticing the gap, or the holy jumping off point. Dṛḍhabhūmiḥ is to be firmly grounded or rooted in.

What had seemed like a long and arduous discipline now sounds more like a joyful state of being. By jumping into the holy gap of restful alertness we reverently observe the truth of our Selves which surpasses time and is beyond limits. Remembering the feeling that we generate with a deep breath, a moment of gratitude, a sigh of relief allows the gap to widen and fill with the peaceful truth of who we are.

We will practice yoga asana, pranayama and meditation daily as a way to align our bodies, our emotions and our thoughts with a state of Being that is elevated, vital and natural. My desire is that you come away with skills that can be applied to uplift and maintain this state with a sense of compassion and gratitude for yourself and your life.

Lynne Minton - Iyengar Yoga“Lynne is quite simply a joy to learn from! She continually deepens her practice and her understanding of the yoga sutras, which keep her teachings fresh and new no matter how long you’ve been studying with her. She has the perfect balance of wisdom, humor, grace, skill, love, and attention (which Mr. Iyengar would say are the same thing!), making her classes and workshops a time of growth and community and delight. I am forever grateful to have her as my friend and mentor!”

“I had no idea how fortunate I was when I walked into my first yoga class with Lynne Minton all those years ago! She instilled in me a great love for the practice and philosophy that I treasure, and continue to explore, to this day. I so appreciate her skill and ability to create rich and nourishing classes that invite all levels of students to explore and grow through yoga asana and pranayama. Her life-long commitment to yoga shines in her teaching and she always creates opportunities to learn, share, and explore the spiritual root of yoga.”

“Practice with Lynne Minton is a sumptuous feast for the mind, body, and soul. Her inquisitive nature, playful spirit, commitment, love, and, enduring faith in the power of presence have inspired generations of yogis. It has been one of the greatest privileges and joys of my life to explore the depths and play in the shallows with her.”
