Most of us don’t realize how tense we are until the moment we finally pause. The jaw softens. The breath deepens. The body exhales, sometimes for the first time all day.
Only then do we recognize how much we’ve been holding.
Over the years of teaching yoga, meditation, and breathwork, I have witnessed what unfolds when people slow down enough to listen. Restoration happens in real time; the breath slows, the body softens, the expression on the face relaxes. Regulation begins to reveal itself quietly and naturally. Many of us are living in a state of nervous system dysregulation without even realizing it. It often isn’t until we pause that we recognize how tightly we’ve been gripping.
Regulation Arises Through Presence
The mat is one container for this work, but it is not confined to it. It is a living practice. Regulation arises through presence. Whether through breathwork, gentle movement, deep stillness, or time in nature, these practices create space for the nervous system to recalibrate.
When we are present, we can observe our thoughts instead of being consumed by them. Without awareness, the mind spirals into imagined stories that feel urgent and real. Mental stress builds and, over time, moves beyond the mind, settling into the body as tension.
With devices rarely leaving our hands and information available at all times, we are constantly stimulated. Comparison, negative self-talk, and worst-case thinking become background noise. Left unchecked, the mind spins and the body responds as though the threat is real.
When we slow down, the nervous system shifts out of survival and into repair. The grip loosens. The breath steadies. The shoulders soften. The mind grows quieter.
One of my teachers, Kamini Desai, once said, “The breath is the mind made visible.” I return to this teaching often as a simple check in throughout the day. The breath becomes an honest mirror, reflecting my inner state and gently guiding me back to presence.
The brain, body, and energy body are miraculous systems. Though complex, we are designed to regulate and return to balance. Choice is key here. The breath is the one function of the autonomic nervous system we can consciously influence, and through it we can create meaningful change.
The true practice is not only what happens on the mat, but how we live. To move through daily life in a regulated state, physically, energetically, mentally, and emotionally, is living yoga.
The body knows how to heal when it is given space. A sacred pause is available to everyone. Consciously choosing to soften, to breathe, and to interrupt the mind on autopilot is an act of free will. It reconnects us with our innate capacity to restore and return to ease. We are designed to come back to this state as often as we remember.
