Both John and Patricia have been teaching yoga for more than 50 years. Over that time, their love for the subject has continued to deepen as has their understanding of the many dimensions that yoga offers us. Their intention in this gathering is to guide the students to a more refined, subtle, internal experience, to take them from the external, the peripheral, the skin to the internal, the core, the soul.

From the Skin to the Soul: A Yoga Journey with Patricia Walden & John SchumacherThis will require that students be experienced, mature practitioners. Stability in Inversions (Sirsasana – headstand and Sarvangasana – shoulderstand) is necessary. For those with medical or physical conditions that preclude Inversions but who have a solid practice, exceptions may be made.

Daily Schedule:

8am — Breakfast
9:30am-12pm — Active asana practice
12:30pm — Lunch/free time
4pm-6pm — Inversions and pranayama
6:30pm — Dinner/free time
7:45pm — Free time to enjoy community and simply be

Patricia and John will each teach one class per day. They will trade off so that each will teach a morning class one day and an afternoon class the next. The morning class will be a more active dynamic class; the afternoon class will focus on Inversions and preparations for and the practice of pranayama.

WHAT PATRICIA & JOHN’S STUDENTS SAY:

From the Skin to the Soul: A Yoga Journey with Patricia Walden & John Schumacher“I know I have already mentioned it before, but I want to emphasize how much I appreciate your teaching style. I always had a moment in class where I wondered whether I would survive it, but in the end, I always felt like I went to infinity and back! You challenged me in a way that made me stick to it and move my limit bit by bit.”

“I feel very privileged that I had the opportunity to study and be a mentee of yours for so many years. Besides all the skillful teaching I learnt from you, the way you embody Yoga has always been a role model and guide for me. And the strong backbone you taught me to perform in kapotasana is now my backbone in “shaky, difficult times”. Your teaching always encouraged me to look at things from different perspectives.”

“Truly, my time with Patricia and John during the late 90s and early 2000s at the Ranch set the stage for everything that came afterwards in my life. Their sincere dedication to the Iyengar yoga method and practice itself, inspired teaching and depth of knowledge of the interplay between body, mind and spirit, and willingness to attend to the unique challenges of each student’s state of being are lessons that I carry forth in all aspects of my life. I am forever grateful to them.”

Summer Vacation Tip! ABOUT PATRICIA WALDEN:

Patricia Walden - Iyengar Yoga

Patricia Walden is respected throughout the world as one of B.K.S Iyengar’s most capable students and teachers. She helped create the National Certification Committee, co-authored The Women’s Book of Yoga and Health and other books; and is cited by Yoga Journal as one of “25 American yoga originals who are shaping yoga today”. Patricia’s DVDs, including Yoga for Beginners, were tremendously influential in the popularization of yoga worldwide, and she teaches Master Classes, workshops, and teacher training internationally.

Patricia came to yoga in her early 20s, as a spiritual calling.
In 1976, she met B.K.S Iyengar and was immediately struck by his light, energy, insight, and genius, as well as by his joy in yoga and delightful humor. She became his devoted student and has traveled to Pune, India, to study with him (and his daughter Geeta) every year since.

From the Skin to the Soul: A Yoga Journey with Patricia Walden & John SchumacherUnder Guruji’s guidance, she has developed her own methodical and inspirational approach to practice and teaching. Patricia has been a prominent figure in the evolution of yoga in the United States and has played an active role in the Iyengar Yoga community since the mid-1980s.

She co-founded the B.K.S Iyengar Center of Cambridge, served as president of the B.K.S Iyengar Association of Massachusetts, and co-chaired the 1987 B.K.S Iyengar Yoga Convention. She helped start the National Certification Committee and has served on it for more than 23 years. Currently, she is vice president of the B.K.S. Iyengar Regional Association of New England.

ABOUT JOHN SCHUMACHER:

John Schumacher - Iyengar Yoga

John first became aware of B.K.S. Iyengar in 1975 when a friend shared a copy of the book Light on Yoga.  As is so often the case with such things, he had no idea at the time that this seemingly inconsequential moment would change his life and lead to his traveling to India to study with B.K.S. Iyengar in 1981. John often shares how his practice was transformed once he began studying with Mr. Iyengar.  He knows first hand that studying with a deeply committed and experienced teacher not only transforms our practice; it can transform the way we connect to the world around us and, equally important, how we tune in to our inner world and ourselves.

John Schumacher has practiced yoga for over five decades. In 1979, he founded Unity Woods Yoga Center, and in 1985 opened the Washington area’s first fulltime yoga studio. For 33 years, he studied in India regularly with B.K.S. Iyengar, who personally certified him as an Advanced Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT). For many years he also studied with world renowned teacher, Dona Holleman.

From the Skin to the Soul: A Yoga Journey with Patricia Walden & John SchumacherJohn’s clear, precise style and his engaging sense of humor made him one of America’s leading yoga teachers. In 2007, he was a keynote speaker at the first NIH conference on alternative health. In 2013, he helped curate the Smithsonian’s widely praised exhibition Yoga: The Art of Transformation. In 2015, Yoga Journal awarded him its prestigious Good Karma Award for spending “40-plus years sharing [his] practice to help authenticate yoga in America today”. John has written for a variety of publications, has appeared in numerous local and national media, and speaks about the practice and benefits of yoga around the world.

For 21 years he taught at feathered Pipe Ranch, 19 of them with Patricia Walden. He currently teaches weekly classes and workshops online at: unitywoods.com.
