Balancing Anger: Honoring the Urge to Break Free and Fly – Lauren Walker

SPRING! Has there ever been a stranger spring? Echoes of Twilight Zone reverberate throughout the land, as we try to make sense of what is happening all around us. It is hard to know what to do, where to turn, who to trust. And still…the world goes on. The flowers push up through the dirt, the trees press out a million buds, the songbirds litter the sky with their wing beats and their songs. And that rising blood pulse that is in every reawakening plant, bug and bird, is also reawakening in us. You can feel it! The urge to break free of constrictions and run, jump, swim, fly!

So we find ourselves in this internal conflict. Many of us are still staying home. Many of us are starting to venture forth. Many of us are fully back out in the world. All over the planet, different iterations of the spring awakening are happening. But wherever you are, you can feel it. Interestingly, in the 5 Element theory, in Spring, the out of balance emotion is anger. Most of us can relate to that one! The way to balance anger is with assertive, compassionate action.

If you’re feeling angry, raise your fists up to the sky, and throw them down to the earth, opening your hands, vocalizing the sound SHHhhhhhhh. Do this a few times, until you feel yourself emptied. And then, take action. Compassionate action. This means not putting anyone else at risk to satisfy your own needs. But try, try, try to get outside, somewhere, somehow. Take off your shoes and plug in to the earth. Mother Earth is pulsing with this new spring energy too, and has excess to spare. The earth is where the healing for each of us can begin. Cry if you have to – Rage, Yell, Scream, Sing at the top of your lungs. And then take a moment to settle and find one beautiful thing to look at. It won’t take long. Beauty is all around you. Focus your attention there. Find beauty, everywhere…
