ABOUT MARISSA VOGL

Guided Plein Air Painting Retreat - Marissa VoglMarissa Vogl a Helena, Montana native is an American contemporary painter celebrated for her bold, expressive works rooted in impressionist traditions and abstract exploration. Vogl is best known for her large-scale abstractions. Born and raised in Montana, she now resides and paints in Charleston, SC. Vogl’s work is a response to her observations of life’s beauty, most often relating to florals and landscapes.

Her intentional mark-making is an emotional and energetic exploration of vivid color creating a spontaneous harmony.
Vogl often begins by painting from life or plein-air references. Her intent is to intuitively translate her reaction from observations, into an experience.

Marissa has taught a variety of painting workshops for both experienced and new painters for over 15 years. Whether the experience is abstraction or traditional, Marissa’s teaching approach is often focused on learning to enjoy the process of painting and explore new techniques in an encouraging environment. Marissa has her degree in Fine Arts/Graphic Design from Montana State University. In 2008 She moved to Charleston, SC where her and her husband have raised 3 children. All while, pursuing the stewardship of the arts. Marissa is the co/owner of Meyer Vogl Gallery, in Charleston, SC.

ABOUT LAURIE MEYER

Guided Plein Air Painting Retreat - Laurie MeyerFor 43 years, Charleston has been both home and inspiration to Laurie— a place whose luminous coastal light, storied architecture, and vibrant life have found their way into nearly every canvas she has touched. Working in oil and watercolor, her paintings are defined by a colorful, painterly sensibility rooted in a rigorous commitment to spectral color philosophy. The result is work that feels alive with the magical interplay of light and shadow, spanning landscapes, architecture, and the human figure with equal beauty and intention.

As devoted to teaching as to her studio practice, Laurie has guided painters for 20 years through weekly classes, local workshops, and sought-after traveling workshops. Her students — many accomplished professionals in their own right — are a testament to the depth of knowledge and genuine passion she brings to sharing her craft.

Laurie is a proud member of the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast, as well as the Oil Painters of America, and the American Impressionist Society.

ABOUT MEYER VOGL GALLERY

Guided Plein Air Painting Retreat - Meyer Vogl GalleryMeyer Vogl Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery located in the heart of Charleston’s bustling gallery district and historic French Quarter. Permanently featuring oil paintings by distinguished artists Laurie Meyer and Marissa Vogl, we also exhibit works by a number of local and internationally recognized artists. These artists are diverse and unique, ranging from emerging to established contemporary masters; the unifying element is that they excite us. By exhibiting artwork for which we feel an emotional connection, we hope to engage the senses of art lovers and introduce collectors to exhilarating new works.

Our ties to Charleston run deep. Owner and artist Laurie Meyer has lived and painted in Charleston for more than 40 years and has watched her career develop and blossom. Her daughter Katie Geer, owner and director of the gallery, grew up surrounded by art and artists, and — along with a seven-year stint in New York City — developed an eye and a passion for the business. Owner and artist Marissa Vogl, a Montana native, burst into the Charleston art scene nearly 15 years ago and hasn’t looked back. All lovers of color and bold brushwork, we have formed a strong alliance and vision for Meyer Vogl Gallery.

Meyer Vogl Gallery is also dedicated to community involvement for the betterment of Charleston. In fact, the idea for the gallery first sprouted during the organization of “Artists for Emanuel,” a 90-person art exhibit that raised funds for Coastal Community Foundation’s Lowcountry Unity Fund, formed after the tragedy at Mother Emanuel AME Church in 2015. It’s our mission to stay committed to our community in various ways.
