The famous 20th century spiritual teacher J Krishnamurti once said to his students “You’d all be much better off to be out in nature somewhere.”

This summer, we’ll be taking the master’s advice, learning and practicing the techniques of yoga for healthy aging and Ayurveda for deep healing with Baxter Bell and Melina Meza in one of the most beautiful places on earth, the Feathered Pipe Ranch. Along the way, we’ll be storing up wisdom to support three pillars of a happy and fulfilling life: a sustainable yoga practice, a wholesome diet, and a healthy lifestyle.

Yoga , Ayurveda & Nature - Feathered PipeBaxter is a physician and acupuncturist as well as an internationally known author (Yoga For Healthy Aging) and yoga teacher. He’ll draw on his understanding of anatomy and medicine to teach yoga practices that support well-being at any age. Melina, a senior yoga teacher and nutritionist, facilitates year-round yoga and Ayurveda workshops and leads retreats in extraordinary sanctuaries around the world. She will introduce students to the healing potential of Ayurveda, which teaches us to align our personal rhythms with nature. Together, Baxter and Melina will offer tools for you to make more grounded and informed choices, and move in greater harmony with all of life.

Mornings at the retreat will include meditation, an asana class with Baxter or Melina, and an experiential talk on yoga and healthy aging (Baxter) or diet, nutrition, and Ayurveda (Melina). Late afternoon sessions will include gentle therapeutic practices, and instruction related to diet, exercise, yoga practice and daily rituals that can align your being with the changing seasons and stages of life.

Our week together will offer plenty of opportunity to rest, restore and recharge in the natural world, with walking meditations in nature, yoga practices and talks outside on the front lawn in the shadow of the Montana hills, and evening hikes to Sky Ranch and beyond. We will enjoy nourishing, home-cooked, plant-rich meals, along with unstructured time for silence, reading, journaling, daydreaming, hiking, sauna, hot tub, or just swimming peacefully in the lake.

Treat yourself to a session with one of the amazing Feathered Pipe Ranch body workers who will be available for you during the retreat. Sleep in a rustic but cozy room, or gaze up at the star washed night sky from a yurt, tipi or tent. Gather round an evening bonfire for quiet contemplation or friendly conversation. Whatever your age or experience, you’ll finish the week refreshed and ready to move forward with a better understanding of how your everyday choices shape your health and happiness.

Summer Vacation Tip! Extend your time in peace and beauty while savoring Western hospitality by spending some time exploring the great West’s National Park treasures either before or after your retreat with Baxter and Melina at the Ranch. Glacier National Park is a glorious and scenic 3.5-hour drive north and west of Feathered Pipe, while Yellowstone is just a 4.5 hour drive south and east of the Ranch through some of the prettiest Western territory you’ll ever see.

ABOUT BAXTER BELL, MD:

Baxter Bell, MD, C-IAYT, eRYT500, co-author of the book Yoga for Healthy Aging and co-founder of the blog of the same name, has been getting to know the power of nature at the Feathered Pipe Ranch since his first visit in August, 1999, almost 20 years ago. He brings a unique perspective to his teaching, combining his understanding of anatomy and medicine with his skill at instructing yoga to people from all walks of life and all levels of ability.

Baxter fell in love with yoga in 1993 while working full-time as a family physician. His appreciation for the potential of yoga for fostering health, healing, and equanimity was so great, he soon stepped away from his medical practice and trained to become a yoga teacher. Now he focuses on teaching yoga full time to ordinary students of all ages and physical conditions as well as the next generation of yoga teachers. He also sees students privately, helping them use yoga to help heal from and/or cope with a wide range of medical conditions.

Baxter teaches classes, workshops, and retreats internationally. He has presented at Yoga Journal Conferences and the International Association of Yoga Therapy’s Sytar Conference, and teaches online courses and classes at YogaUOnline. He has written articles for Yoga Journal and the Journal of the International Association of Yoga Therapy and is often quoted as an expert on yoga and health by major national news outlets such as the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal.

ABOUT MELINA MEZA:

Melina MezaMelina Meza, eRYT500, BS Nutrition, Ayurvedic Health Educator, Certified Yoga for Aging Teacher, is an avid hiker, tennis player, biker and nature photographer and has discovered many magical places around the Feathered Pipe Ranch since her first visit in 2013. She has shared her knowledge of Hatha Yoga, Ayurveda, and whole foods nutrition with yogis around the world for over 20 years, She is attuned to the five elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether, which she weaves into her rich Ayurvedic teachings. Melina pioneered Seasonal Vinyasa, an innovative multi-disciplined approach to well-being, and is the author of the Art of Sequencing books and the creator of the Yoga for the Seasons: Fall Vinyasa DVD. Since 1997, Melina has been teaching yoga at 8 Limbs Yoga Centers in Seattle, Washington, where she also is Director of their 200- and 500-Hour Teachers’ Training Program.

Currently residing in Oakland California, Melina facilitates many yoga and Ayurveda workshops and leads retreats each year. Her continual growth as a teacher and practitioner has been influenced by studying with numerous instructors, including Dr. Robert Svoboda, Scott Blossom, Jin Sung, Sarah Powers, Gary Kraftsow, Kathleen Hunt, and Baxter Bell, MD. Retreats and sabbaticals are also vital to Melina’s personal practice and bring her deeper reflection and inspiration.

Melina holds a bachelor’s degree in nutrition from Bastyr University, where she deepened her interest in the world of whole foods nutrition, and is a certified Ayurvedic Health Educator from the California College of Ayurveda. While attending Bastyr, she found what her body, mind, and spirit had been waiting for — yoga. From her very first class in 1993, she has never stopped exploring the physical, mental, and spiritual practices passed down from the ancient sages. Yoga has been the “launching pad” — as her teacher Gary Kraftsow describes it — that has rocketed her into a life journey of cultivating the disciplines necessary to gain insight and wisdom integral to being healthy, compassionate, and radiant, while sharing those gifts with others.

Registration deposit required: A $500 deposit is required to secure online registration/payment.

Shuttle Service: Airport shuttle service on the day of arrival/departure is an additional $65. Non-arrival/departure shuttle service is $100

Arrival and departure: Please plan to arrive at the Ranch no later than 5pm on the arrival day (Saturday, 10 August) of your retreat so you can join us for a tour of the grounds before dinner at 6:30pm and our group evening orientation following dinner. Please arrange to leave the Ranch in the morning or early afternoon of departure day (Saturday, 17 August). There are no classes or sessions on departure day. We request that our guests depart their lodging by 9am on departure day to give our staff sufficient time to prepare for incoming guests.
